Desperate men, women, and children sacrificed their health, safety, and lives, often for little money.<\/p>\n<p>Workers could spend <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/history-of-the-40-hour-workweek-2015-10\" rel=\"noopener\">12 to 14 hours<\/a> a day near inferno-like furnaces; in airless rooms choking on cotton dust; or hauling coal in darkened, gas-filled tunnels.<\/p>\n<p>Each industry came with its own <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/jobs-linked-to-higher-risk-of-cancer-2019-7\" rel=\"noopener\">unique hazards<\/a>, and there were few laws to protect workers or provide their families with financial security if they died.<\/p>\n<p>Black workers and immigrants often had to take the deadliest <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/restored-steam-locomotive-rolls-to-anniversary-event-2019-5\" rel=\"noopener\">jobs in rail<\/a>, construction, and other already dangerous workplaces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/what-the-world-looked-like-150-years-ago-2020-5\" rel=\"noopener\">immigrants and their children<\/a> made up the bulk of the industrial labor force, they also bore a disproportionate burden when it came to fatalities and casualties on the job,&#8221; Michael K. Rosenow, author of &#8220;Death and Dying in the Working Class, 1865-1920,&#8221; told Business Insider.<\/p>\n<p>Few industries and states kept track of the number of workers who were killed or injured, but some estimates put the number of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/map-states-with-the-most-fatal-workplace-injuries-2019-7\" rel=\"noopener\">industrial fatalities<\/a> at between 25,000 to 80,000 a year and the number of injuries between 300,000 and 1.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Vintage photos show just a fraction of the dangers they faced on the job.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slideshow\">\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Railroad work was one of the most dangerous jobs in the US.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"3150\" width=\"3972\" alt=\"A train moves along a track on a rocky mountain\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793e4fb2fcded5e9074a5de-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>Workers building railroad tracks in mountainous areas faced many hazards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">The Print Collector\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>Even as workers were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/golden-spike-event-marks-150th-anniversary-of-transcontinental-railroad-2019-5\" rel=\"noopener\">building the railroads<\/a> in the second half of the 19th century, it was dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You had a clear segmentation of who was doing the construction of the railroads versus who was an engineer in a locomotive or who was a fireman or a brakeman,&#8221; Rosenow said. &#8220;And the construction efforts, oftentimes, went to immigrant labor populations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For example, in the 1860s, the Central Pacific Railway hired thousands of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/lesser-known-chinatowns-us-teach-us-about-asian-american-history-2022-8\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese immigrants<\/a> for some of the deadliest jobs, from working with explosives to scaling cliff faces.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the risk, they received a third less pay than their white coworkers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Derailments were common, but workers also died coupling cars or working on tracks.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"4293\" width=\"4171\" alt=\"A train brakeman signals from a train and hangs off of it\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793e551ae09223df2bb6c25-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>A brakeman on an ore train in Bingham Canyon, Utah, in 1942.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">GHI\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>Many factors contributed to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nellie-bly-elizabeth-bisland-around-the-world-technology-2023-10\" rel=\"noopener\">danger of rail travel<\/a> in the US. Collapsing bridges, landslides, and faulty equipment <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/215403\/pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">all caused<\/a> train derailments or collisions. By the early 1900s, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/1907\/05\/railroad-accidents\/638537\/\" rel=\"noopener\">thousands<\/a> died in railroad accidents every year. In 1905, trains injured over 86,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>However, workers bore the brunt of the danger. &#8220;In 1890, about one in every 300 railroad workers was killed,&#8221; Rosenow said. The majority of the deaths were from &#8220;little accidents,&#8221; as one railway claim agent called them.<\/p>\n<p>Railroad workers had to walk between cars to couple and uncouple them. They rode on top of trains to work the brakes. Faulty boiler equipment released steam scalding enough to cause deadly burns.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the most dangerous occupations on the railroads was that of a brakeman, who had this perilous task of stopping the trains,&#8221; Rosenow said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Trains were so dangerous that many railways supported hospitals along their routes.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"2400\" width=\"3786\" alt=\"A derailed train in some trees with many people looking on\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793e7cae7e163809a2279ca-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>A passenger train derailed in Northern California circa 1925.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Nextrecord Archives\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>As <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/history-map-railroads-spreading-across-united-states-train-2015-11\" rel=\"noopener\">train travel expanded<\/a> in the latter part of the 19th century, railroad companies built or helped fund hospitals and created in-house medical organizations that could care for passengers during emergencies. By World War I, 10% of all US doctors worked for the railways, at least part-time.<\/p>\n<p>Railway surgeons treated <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/vintage-travel-photos-from-100-years-ago-1920s\" rel=\"noopener\">rail passengers<\/a> and crew by setting broken bones, amputating limbs, and treating burns. Receiving adequate medical care might dissuade them from bringing a costly lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>Physicians also provided regular medical care for company employees. The railways used these benefits to gain worker loyalty and tamp down unionizing, according to &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.press.jhu.edu\/books\/title\/8845\/death-rode-rails\" rel=\"noopener\">Death Rode the Rails: American Railroad Accidents and Safety, 1828\u20141965<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">As railroads expanded into the Pacific Northwest, an increasing number of loggers risked their lives to fell trees.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"5838\" width=\"4946\" alt=\"A man tied to a tree high up with an ax dangling near him\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793e84be7e163809a2279f4-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>A logger suspended from a tree circa 1895.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Archive Photos\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>The fir, spruce, and cedar trees of the Pacific Northwest helped build boomtowns during the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/how-the-us-whitewashed-the-california-gold-rush-2021-4\" rel=\"noopener\">California Gold Rush<\/a>. When railroad tracks finally connected the East and West Coasts, they offered a cheaper, more efficient way to transport lumber.<\/p>\n<p>Logging was arduous. Fallers climbed and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/deforestation-photos-2019-4\" rel=\"noopener\">cut trees<\/a> by hand with axes or saws. Other workers, known as buckers, stripped the bark and sawed the trees into logs. Newer technology in the 1880s called a donkey engine transported logs through the air with cables and pulleys, risking crushing workers if the machinery failed.<\/p>\n<p>In the early 1900s, one in 150 Washington <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/deadliest-jobs-in-america-bls-2022-12\" rel=\"noopener\">loggers died<\/a> each year. At the time, its 1-mile length would make it the world&#8217;s longest bridge.<\/p>\n<p>To anchor it in New York City&#8217;s East River, workers known as &#8220;sand hogs&#8221; spent months digging through the muddy river floor. They needed to sink caissons, rectangular bowl-like structures filled with pressurized air, all the way to the bedrock, as deep as 60 feet below the water.<\/p>\n<p>When they resurfaced, the workers would feel stabbing pains in their joints, get red splotches on their skin, and begin projectile vomiting. Some died from what&#8217;s now known as &#8220;the bends&#8221; or <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/world-war-scientists-experimented-breathe-underwater-helped-with-dday-2024-4\" rel=\"noopener\">decompression sickness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Historian David McCullough estimated that the bends, falls, debris, and other accidents killed at least 27 people during the project, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/movies\/news\/a27227\/brooklyn-bridge-bridge-of-death-esq-0214\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Esquire<\/a> reported in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Meanwhile, women and children took on grueling work in textile mills.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"3387\" width=\"4964\" alt=\"Women and children stand at large spinning machines in a factory\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793f218196626c40984f8e9-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>Young workers in a mill in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1912.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Universal History Archive\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>At the end of the 18th century, textile mills with new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/11-jobs-from-1850-that-are-totally-extinct-2013-9\" rel=\"noopener\">manufacturing technologies<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/classroom-materials\/industrial-revolution-in-the-united-states\/\" rel=\"noopener\">brought<\/a> the Industrial Revolution to the US. By the late 19th century, women were doing 75% of the work of making cloth in Lowell, Massachusetts, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/26072149\" rel=\"noopener\">Scientific American<\/a> reported in 1879.<\/p>\n<p>Many came from rural areas of New England, swapping farm work for factory jobs. Since many <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/vintage-photos-of-women-working-factories\" rel=\"noopener\">women left their families<\/a> behind and lived together in boarding houses, they formed new communities.<\/p>\n<p>The boarding houses often had curfews and behavior codes, and at least one company&#8217;s handbook <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/libguides.uml.edu\/c.php?g=529205&amp;p=3619725\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> it wouldn&#8217;t employ anyone &#8220;known to be guilty of immorality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Most of the women were between 15 and 30, but there were children working at textile mills as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Jobs as spinners and doffers were seen as &#8220;children&#8217;s work&#8221; in cotton mills.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"4119\" width=\"5091\" alt=\"Young boys, one barefoot and wearing a hat, stand on top of a large machine\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793ea36eb4be2fff9a215c0-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>Boys replacing bobbins at a factory in Macon, Georgia, circa 1909.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Universal History Archive\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>In 1900, children under 16 made up a quarter of the South&#8217;s 100,000 textile workers. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/things-normal-100-years-ago-2018-9#there-were-no-federal-laws-on-child-labor-meaning-many-children-dropped-out-of-school-13\" rel=\"noopener\">Child labor<\/a> grew over the next few years, with 20,000 kids under the age of 12 entering the work force by 1904, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/mlr\/2017\/article\/history-of-child-labor-in-the-united-states-part-1.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n<p>In cotton mills, children were prized for their small and nimble fingers. Spinners, often girls, would fill bobbins or cones with thread, and doffers, usually boys, would replace them on the device.<\/p>\n<p>When a family started working at his mill, one owner said, &#8220;it was the children of the family who became skilled employees,&#8221; the BLS reported. Many belonged to low-income families who needed extra income or to get out of debt. Other children had no one else to rely on.<\/p>\n<p>Organizations like the Charles Loring Brace Children&#8217;s Aid Society moved orphaned children around the country on trains to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/child-labor-in-america-2013-1\" rel=\"noopener\">supply rural areas<\/a> and factories with cheap labor, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/mlr\/2017\/article\/history-of-child-labor-in-the-united-states-part-1.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">BLS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One estimate put a child&#8217;s mill earnings in 1860 at an average of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/3518953\" rel=\"noopener\">$0.57 per day<\/a>, about $22 a day now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Mill workers spent long hours breathing in cotton dust, which led to respiratory illnesses.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"1308\" width=\"2460\" alt=\"Men hold armfuls of cotton near large equipment\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793eba34bf52b7bab8a62ce\"><figcaption>Millworkers loading hoppers, part of the process of making cotton cloth, circa 1910.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Archive Photos\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>Workers endlessly inhaled cotton dust, giving &#8220;every one the appearance of having a cold,&#8221; according to one report from the 1870s. Many had likely contracted byssinosis, a disease that causes coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.<\/p>\n<p>Other investigations during this time found the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/ranking-countries-with-longer-workweeks-than-the-us-2019-8\" rel=\"noopener\">long hours<\/a>, stifling conditions, and physical stress of the work made otherwise healthy people sick. Some owners refused to open the windows, even in summer, because they thought the warm, moist air was the ideal environment for manufacturing the cloth. Wool workers picked up <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/aboutdol\/history\/mono-regsafepart01\" rel=\"noopener\">parasitic diseases<\/a> from handling the material. Vaporous odors were so strong that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/read.dukeupress.edu\/labor\/article-abstract\/14\/3\/109\/130411\/Death-and-Dying-in-the-Working-Class-1865-1920-by\" rel=\"noopener\">brassworkers<\/a> drank whiskey or beer to cope. A new factory worker in the early 1900s could show symptoms of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/children-lead-poisoning-gop-debt-ceiling-budget-cuts-housing-republicans-2023-5\" rel=\"noopener\">lead poisoning<\/a> after just a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>In 1907, Illinois held the US&#8217; first commission on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/most-unhealthy-jobs-in-america-2017-4\" rel=\"noopener\">occupational disease<\/a>. It took nearly 10 minutes to free her.<\/p>\n<p>Later, her doctor described her hand as looking &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/injury-impoverished\/C1F932377EF9D47189B93B63BF589A10\" rel=\"noopener\">parboiled, cooked and bruised<\/a>.&#8221; Several fingers needed to be amputated, and the pain kept her awake at night, she later said.<\/p>\n<p>In a lawsuit against her employer, Murray&#8217;s mother testified that her daughter required constant care and could no longer feed or dress herself. Starting at around 5 a.m., the employees worked 12 to 14 hours, six days a week. They had to pack the rest of their lives into their time off.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How much is done in the three short hours from seven to ten o&#8217;clock,&#8221; one mill girl <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/collections.americanantiquarian.org\/millgirls\/\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in 1845.<\/p>\n<p>While they appreciated the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/lowe\/learn\/historyculture\/the-mill-girls-of-lowell.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">higher wages<\/a> than they would earn elsewhere, many women in Lowell, Massachusetts, began organizing and pushing for 10-hour workdays in the 1830s and 1840s. Eventually, mills shortened the days to 11 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Though the demographics of Lowell and its labor movement began to shift toward the end of the 19th century, women continued to demand changes. In <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rutgersuniversitypress.org\/when-the-air-became-important\/9780813587967\/\" rel=\"noopener\">1873<\/a>, over 100 women in Lowell walked out to protest the hot and humid conditions of their workroom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Working with steel led to horrific injuries.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"3069\" width=\"4828\" alt=\"Men work near glowing pits in a steel mill with machinery around\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793f4c0196626c40984f9b6-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>Men working in the South Works Steel Mill in Chicago, circa 1939.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Ivan Dmitri\/Michael Ochs Archives\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>In 1906, the Bridge and Structural Iron Workers&#8217; Union in Chicago compiled the number of deaths and injuries and found that 147 of its 1,358 members were killed or seriously hurt in a single year.<\/p>\n<p>Writer Charles Rumford Walker worked at a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/decarbonize-steel-green-uk-scientists-how-to-cut-pollution-steel-2023-2\" rel=\"noopener\">steel mill<\/a> and described the conditions in the Atlantic Monthly. The workers&#8217; cries of warning continued to echo in his head. &#8220;Watch out for the crane that is taking a ladle of hot metal over your head, or a load of scrap, or a bundle of pipes; watch out for the hot cinder coming down the hole from the furnace-doors,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>It was often difficult for workers to hear those shouts, though. Working in an environment with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-steel-biden-harris-trump-oppose-sale-nippon-2024-9\" rel=\"noopener\">molten metal<\/a> and thunderous clanging could be a deadly mix.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">The steel industry could ruin a worker&#8217;s health.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"3601\" width=\"5058\" alt=\"A worker hols a bucket on a long pole and catches liquid meta pouring from a large industrial device\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793f7a4eb4be2fff9a21a12-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>A steel worker at Baldwin Locomotive Works in Pennsylvania, circa 1937.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Sepia Times\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-steel-former-largest-steelmaker-sold-nippon-steel-japan-2023-12\" rel=\"noopener\">Steel mill shifts<\/a> were typically 12 hours but every two weeks, workers would stay for 24 hours to rotate from working days to nights.<\/p>\n<p>In summer, laboring near blistering furnaces could get so hot that workers had to &#8220;take off their boots, and pour the perspiration out of them,&#8221; one journalist <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/read.dukeupress.edu\/labor\/article-abstract\/14\/3\/109\/130411\/Death-and-Dying-in-the-Working-Class-1865-1920-by\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was rare for older men to withstand these conditions. The &#8220;long hours, the strain, and the sudden changes of temperature use a man up,&#8221; according to one worker. &#8220;He quits before he gets 50.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">A deadly strike in 1892 made it difficult for steel workers to organize.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"2416\" width=\"3572\" alt=\"A crowd strikes outside a steel mill near men with guns wearing helmets\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793fa94196626c40984fbcf-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>Workers on strike at the American Republic Steel Works in 1937.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">MPI\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>In the late 1880s, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/andrew-carnegie-rags-to-riches-2012-11\" rel=\"noopener\">Carnegie Steel<\/a> tried to break up one of the US&#8217; most powerful labor unions, the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers.<\/p>\n<p>The AAISW had led several strikes to improve working conditions. In 1892, negotiations between the company and the union stalled, and Carnegie planned to lock the workers out and bring in replacements.<\/p>\n<p>On July 6, the strike turned deadly when workers traded gunfire with agents from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/history-of-police-in-the-us-photos-2020-6\" rel=\"noopener\">Pinkerton National Detective Agency<\/a>, whom the company had hired as security. Hard published <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/aboutdol\/history\/mono-regsafepart05\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Making Steel and Killing Men<\/a>.&#8221; In addition to the 46 deaths at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-steel-carbon-capture-does-it-work-reduce-emissions-controversial-2024-4\" rel=\"noopener\">US Steel<\/a>&#8216;s plant in Chicago, Hard estimated there were hundreds of others who were permanently or temporarily disabled.<\/p>\n<p>The 46 workers &#8220;went to their deaths by a large number of different and divergent routes,&#8221; Hard wrote. Blast furnaces, dynamite, electrocution, falls, falling objects, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/steelworker-in-china-jumps-into-furnace-after-devastating-stock-losses-2021-3\" rel=\"noopener\">hot metal<\/a> could all be killers in a steel mill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Must we continue to pay this price for the honor of leading the world in the cheap and rapid production of steel and iron?&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Must we continue to be obliged to think of scorched and scalded human beings whenever we sit on the back platform of an observation car and watch the steel rails rolling out behind us?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Mining was another extremely dangerous occupation.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"3864\" width=\"5423\" alt=\"Several workers wearing overalls and hats in a mine\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793fb1d4bf52b7bab8a67b8-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>Five miners inside a lead mine in Cassville, Wisconsin, in 1900.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Frank Feiker\/Wisconsin Historical Society\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s, by the nature of the work, inherently dangerous to go under the earth to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/life-working-in-coal-mines-in-america-photos-2019-10\" rel=\"noopener\">excavate the coal<\/a>,&#8221; Rosenow said. In the early 1900s, around 3,000 US miners died and another 12,500 were seriously injured each year.<\/p>\n<p>Paid by the ton for the coal they mined, workers didn&#8217;t receive money for safely securing their worksites. They would stabilize the roof with coal pillars and timber, but falling rocks still caused the majority of mining deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Others died from explosions or by falling down mine shafts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe that more than half the casualties are directly caused by overwork and long hours in the damp and foul air of the mine,&#8221; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/read.dukeupress.edu\/labor\/article-abstract\/14\/3\/109\/130411\/Death-and-Dying-in-the-Working-Class-1865-1920-by\" rel=\"noopener\">the National Labor Tribune<\/a> wrote in the 1880s. Breaker boys separated impurities like slate from the coal as it moved by on conveyor belts. CF&amp;I evicted them from their company-owned homes, and the miners and their families moved to tent camps.<\/p>\n<p>On April 20, 1914, the National Guard tried to break up the camps and killed several miners. Two women and 11 children died when a burning tent collapsed on top of the cellar where they were hiding, suffocating them. It trapped over 200 miners underground.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Howard kept a diary of the ordeal. &#8220;The only thing I regret is that my brother is here, and cannot help my mother out after I am dead and gone,&#8221; he wrote. He and 258 others lost their lives, and many of their families had no means of supporting themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Two years earlier, a mine explosion in Monongah, West Virginia, killed 362 people, including several children. The employees of the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/triangle-factory-fire-2011-3\" rel=\"noopener\">Triangle Waist Company<\/a>, mostly women, were trying to escape a fire but locked stairwell doors barred their way out.<\/p>\n<p>Desperate to get out, some jumped to their deaths. By the time firefighters had put the flames out, 146 people had died, many of them young immigrant women. Some were just 14 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Days after the fire, tens of thousands of people walked for hours in a procession to honor the dead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Owners Isaac] Harris and [Max] Blanck, the Triangle Company, have offered to pay one week&#8217;s wages to the families of the dead girls \u2014 as though it were summer and they are giving them a vacation!&#8221; reformer Martha Bru\u00e8re <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/trianglefire.ilr.cornell.edu\/primary\/testimonials\/ootss_MarthaBensleyBruere.html\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Unions and reformers helped bring about new safety laws.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"5744\" width=\"8000\" alt=\"A police officer with raised billy club pointed toward a boy in front of a crowd of children\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793fde84bf52b7bab8a68cf-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>The 1904 Stockyards Strike in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Chicago Sun-Times\/Chicago Daily News collection\/Chicago History Museum\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-content\">\n<p>Tragedies like the mining explosions and factory fire helped spur what Rosenow called &#8220;regulation by disaster.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For decades, Americans really didn&#8217;t have a good sense of what was happening in American workplaces or were in a state of denial,&#8221; he said. These headline-making tragedies in the early 20th century grabbed their attention.<\/p>\n<p>Reformers, journalists, and the workers themselves already knew about the dangerous conditions and had long been trying to change them.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/labor-unions-might-be-necessary-2015-10\" rel=\"noopener\">labor unions<\/a> not only pushed their companies to make conditions safer, they also put pressure on elected officials to keep track of workers&#8217; deaths and injuries and to make safety laws, Rosenow said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<div class=\"slide-title\">Today, some industries have higher rates of death, injury, and illness than others.<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" height=\"2609\" width=\"3900\" alt=\"A construction worker wearing a blue hard hat and yellow vest rests against his shovel\" class=\"lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/howtobigisland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/6793fe67eb4be2fff9a21c82-scaled.jpg\"><figcaption>A construction worker takes a quick break while digging a trench during a heat wave in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright\">Allen J. Roosevelt signed the Fair Labor Standards Act into law, which established a minimum wage, the right to overtime pay, and rules for child labor. Government agencies such as the Bureau of Mines were created to find ways to prevent workplace disasters like fires and explosions.<\/p>\n<p>While the frequency of mining disasters has dropped, they do still happen. In 2010, an explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia killed 29 people.<\/p>\n<p>Other industries, such as construction, have the highest number of worker fatalities from falls and transportation-related incidents.
